Layers For Winter Sailing

Are you struggling to stay warm whilst out sailing on the water in colder conditions?

Here are some bits of sailing clothing that we recommend to keep you warm on the water. Adding an extra layer can keep you warm and protected which helps to improve your sailing performance on colder days.

Zhik Hydrophobic Top

The Zhik hydrophobic top is made from a water repellent material with a fleece inner. It is available in men and women's versions and can be worn under your wetsuit or as a top on warmer days. The hydrophobic top is designed to keep cold water, sweat and moisture away from your body while you are sailing to keep you warmer on the water for longer. This is a favourite item in all sailing bags worldwide. Why not swap your rash-vest for a much warmer hydrophobic top this winter?

The Gill Spray Top and Zhik Dinghy Smock

The spray top and dinghy smock are great for days when it is wet and windy.

The Zhik Dinghy Smock is a breathable spray top that is perfect for dinghy and keelboat sailors. Being made from breathable and waterproof fabric it is the perfect outer layer to have in your sailing bag, or even stored on the boat in case the weather changes. By having an adjustable neck, wrists and waist anyone can make sure they are comfortable when they are wearing this on the water. Other great features include a large chest pocket and neck zip so it is easy to take on and off also providing extra ventilation when required.

The Gill Spray Top doesn't include as many features but that is reflected in a lower price point. With elasticated cuffs, waist and velcro adjustment around the neck, it is a great alternative to have available for the colder days on the water.

Superwarm X Top

The Superwarm is Zhik's winter wetsuit choice but if you would like an extra layer any time of year the Superwarm top is a good choice.

The Zhik Superwarm X top can be worn over your hydrophobic top for the ultimate weather protection. It can also be worn under your spray top as an extra layer. The Superwarm X top is packed full of features designed to keep you warm.

Here are a few of our favourite features:

  • 4-way stretch
  • 3D Body-mapped
  • Ziband Wrist seals
  • Fast-drying inner
  • Glued, Blind stitched and seam-sealed inside to keep the water out

The Zhik Superwarm is also available in a V range which has a slightly lower price point with fewer features but the same warmth.

Sailing Socks

Neoprene sailing socks are a great way to keep your feet warm over the colder months. By wearing neoprene socks you give your feet an extra layer of protection from the cold water and reduce the times you come off the water because you can no longer feel your feet.

Zhik Superwarm Sailing Socks

Most boots fill up as soon as you step in the water. By adding a pair of Superwarm socks to your sailing bag you can prevent the water from getting to your feet as quickly.

Zhik has made sure the water is kept out of your socks by glueing the seams. Glued seams not only make the stitching and join of the neoprene stronger but also prolong water ingress on your feet.

Key features we love about the Zhik Superwarm socks:

  • 3mm neoprene insulation
  • Super stretch fabric
  • Hydrobase lining
  • Glued and blind stitched seams

Gill Neoprene Sailing Socks

These socks are designed to be worn alone or as an extra layer in your boots during the colder months. Made from neoprene with a seamless sole the neoprene socks are great for all water sports all year round.

Winter Sailing Gloves

Keeping your hands warm whist maintaining dexterity and manoeuvrability is difficult, a good pair of sailing gloves will help.

Gill 3 Season Sailing Gloves

The Gill 3 season gloves can be used all year round, constructed from lightweight neoprene and dura-grip fabric they provide excellent levels of grip while remaining warmth. With a long cuff, they can be tucked under your outer layers to seal your hands from the elements for longer. These gloves can be used for a range of water sports.

Here are some of the best features of the Gill 3 season gloves:

  • No seam on fingertips
  • Wrap around palm protection
  • Lightweight
  • Extended cuffs

Zhik Superwarm Sailing Gloves

Zhik Superwarm gloves are a great layer for the colder days on the water. With a soft fleece-lined inner and water repellent outer, they will keep your hands warm and toasty.

Key Features:

  • Super stretch Neoprene
  • Water repellent outer
  • Fast-drying inner
  • Glued, blind stitched and seam-sealed
  • Pre-shaped reinforced palm

Zhik recommends using these gloves as a hand warm and using a pair of Zhik tactical grip gloves over the top for the best grip and protection.
